Carta de Domingo: La invitación que cambia una vida
El mes de agosto, mes de la membresía, nos recuerda que Rotary se fortalece con cada nuevo socio que llega a nuestras filas. Pero, ¿cómo se da ese momento tan especial en que alguien recibe la invitación para unirse a nuestro club? Permítanme contarlo en forma de historia.
Don Ernesto había asistido a varias actividades de nuestro club. Siempre dispuesto a colaborar, curioso por aprender más, y con un espíritu de servicio evidente. Desde hacía meses, algunos rotarios lo habían observado con atención y comentado en silencio: “Él tiene madera de Rotario”.
El proceso siguió el camino correcto: el Comité de Membresía lo evaluó, la Junta Directiva lo aprobó y, finalmente, se dio ese instante que nunca se olvida: el de invitarlo formalmente a ser parte de la familia rotaria. Recuerdo cómo nuestro presidente lo buscó una tarde y le dijo con palabras sencillas pero profundas:
“Ernesto, nuestro club ha visto en ti un ejemplo de servicio y liderazgo. Por eso, hemos decidido invitarte a formar parte de Rotary. No es solo pertenecer a un club, es un compromiso con la comunidad y contigo mismo. ¿Aceptas acompañarnos en este camino?”.
Ernesto quedó en silencio unos segundos. Luego sonrió y respondió: “Siempre admiré lo que hacían los rotarios. Si ustedes creen en mí, yo también creo que puedo aportar”. Ese instante resume el verdadero valor de la membresía: no se trata de llenar una lista de nombres, sino de abrir las puertas a personas que comparten la visión de un mundo mejor.
Cada invitación es, en esencia, una semilla de transformación: para el nuevo socio, para el club y para la comunidad. Hoy, cuando veo a Ernesto participar activamente en los proyectos, confirmo lo que siempre repetimos en Rotary: invitar a alguien a nuestro club es darle la oportunidad de servir, crecer y transformar vidas, empezando por la suya propia.
Queridos amigos, el mes de la membresía nos motiva a estar atentos a quienes nos rodean. Tal vez en nuestra próxima reunión, en una actividad de servicio o en un encuentro casual, esté la persona que recibirá esa invitación que cambia destinos.
Porque Rotary no es un lugar al que uno llega por casualidad, sino por el reconocimiento de su valor como ser humano. Y la invitación es solo el inicio de un viaje de amistad, servicio y paz.

Sunday Letter: The Invitation that Changes a Life
August, the month of membership, reminds us that Rotary grows stronger with every new member who joins our ranks. But how does that very special moment happen—the moment when someone is invited to become part of our club? Allow me to tell it as a story.
Don Ernesto had attended several of our club’s activities. Always willing to help, eager to learn more, and with an evident spirit of service. For months, some Rotarians had observed him closely and quietly commented: “He has what it takes to be a Rotarian.”
The process followed its proper course: the Membership Committee evaluated him, the Board of Directors approved him, and finally, that unforgettable moment arrived—the moment of formally inviting him to become part of the Rotary family.
I remember how our president approached him one afternoon and said, in simple yet profound words:
“Ernesto, our club has seen in you an example of service and leadership. That is why we have decided to invite you to join Rotary. It is not only about belonging to a club, but about making a commitment—to the community and to yourself. Will you join us on this journey?”
Ernesto remained silent for a few seconds. Then he smiled and replied: “I have always admired what Rotarians do. If you believe in me, then I also believe I can contribute.”
That moment captures the true value of membership: it is not about filling a list of names, but about opening the doors to people who share the vision of a better world. Every invitation is, in essence, a seed of transformation: for the new member, for the club, and for the community.
Today, when I see Ernesto actively participating in projects, I confirm what we always say in Rotary: inviting someone to our club is giving them the opportunity to serve, to grow, and to transform lives—starting with their own.
Dear friends, Membership Month inspires us to be attentive to those around us. Perhaps at our next meeting, during a service activity, or in a casual encounter, we will find the person who will receive that invitation that changes destinies.
Because Rotary is not a place one arrives at by chance, but through the recognition of one’s value as a human being. And the invitation is only the beginning of a journey of friendship, service, and peace.
