Carta de Domingo: Desde Bucaramanga, con amistad y energía rotaria
Este año he tenido el privilegio de visitar Colombia en tres ocasiones, cada una marcada por el espíritu rotario y la calidez de nuestra Zona 25A. Primero fue la Feria de Proyectos en enero, luego el emotivo Latir del Programa de Intercambio de Jóvenes en Cali, y ahora la Conferencia del Distrito 4271 en Bucaramanga.
Debo comenzar con una nota personal: con ambas gobernadoras de mi año de generación, Sandra Perdomo y Blanca Cifuentes, me une una amistad especial desde el primer momento. Somos 14 gobernadores que compartimos esta generación, y tengo una buena relación con cada uno, pero con Sandra y Blanquita hay un cariño y cercanía que solo se ha fortalecido con el tiempo.
La conferencia de Bucaramanga ha sido un verdadero referente en muchos sentidos, comenzando por la camaradería entre los distritos 4271 y 4281. Fue conmovedor ver a tantos exgobernadores reencontrarse después de años sin verse. Aunque Colombia es un solo país, sus distritos celebran conferencias por separado, y eventos como la Feria de Proyectos o Latir no siempre los reúnen a todos. Esta conferencia fue una oportunidad significativa para estrechar esos lazos.
Bucaramanga, con sus colinas y su gente amable, nos recibió con los brazos abiertos. Uno de los momentos especiales fue el evento en la Universidad de Chicamocha, dedicada a las artes culinarias y el arte, donde disfrutamos de una cena cuidadosamente explicada, danzas tradicionales y música en vivo que alegró la noche.
El Consejo de Exgobernadores también se reunió para un almuerzo acompañado de música de trío y luego mariachi en honor a nuestro querido RPRI Jesús Valdéz y su Dama Rotaria Mary, en un ambiente de alegría y fraternidad.
La inauguración oficial fue en el hotel sede, Holiday Inn, con una entrada de banderas de los países representados—incluidos Panamá y México—además de las banderas de los departamentos que conforman el distrito. Cada vez que se mencionaba una bandera, los rotarios de esa región se ponían de pie con orgullo y aplaudían. Los discursos del Gobernador del Estado de Santander, el Alcalde de Bucaramanga, el Presidente de la Conferencia y, por supuesto, el de la Gobernadora Blanquita, estuvieron llenos de inspiración y unidad, animando a seguir creciendo en membresía y a cumplir las metas de cada club.
Un momento especialmente emotivo fue el homenaje al rotario Omar J. Gómezeses Arenas del Club de San Gil, con 61 años de servicio rotario. Con 90 años de edad, ha dejado una huella imborrable, ¡y no se perdió casi ninguno de los bailes! Bromeaba con los exgobernadores diciendo que para llegar a esa edad bailando así, ¡mejor no ser gobernador!
El sábado continuó con informes de Rotaract, Interact y de la Gobernadora Blanca Cifuentes, junto a presentaciones sumamente enriquecedoras. La noche fue una verdadera fiesta cultural, con bailes típicos, orquesta en vivo y discoteca donde los rotarios del 4271 demostraron una energía inigualable.
Un detalle que no puedo dejar de mencionar fue la alegre y activa participación de los jóvenes del programa de Intercambio de Jóvenes, provenientes de países como Alemania, Francia, Brasil, Italia y muchos más, quienes compartieron su experiencia, colaboraron en distintas actividades y dieron un toque internacional a la conferencia.
Al momento de recibir esta Carta de Domingo, la conferencia aún continúa, y espero compartir una segunda parte con más reflexiones. Pero desde ya puedo decir que participar en eventos de otros distritos es una experiencia que nos abre horizontes, nos permite aprender, intercambiar ideas y fortalecer nuestra hermandad internacional.

Sunday Letter: From Bucaramanga, with Rotary Friendship and Energy
This year, I’ve had the privilege of visiting Colombia three times—each visit enriched by the Rotary spirit and the warmth of our Zone 25A. First, the Project Fair in January; then the heartfelt Latir Youth Exchange Conference in Cali; and now, the inspiring District 4271 Conference in Bucaramanga.
On a personal note, I must say that with both Governors from my class year, Sandra Perdomo and Blanca Cifuentes, I’ve shared a close friendship since the day we met. There are 14 governors in our class, and I enjoy a good relationship with all of them, but with Sandra and Blanquita, there’s a special bond that continues to grow.
The Bucaramanga Conference has been a true benchmark, especially in the camaraderie between Districts 4271 and 4281. It was touching to see so many Past District Governors reconnecting after years apart. Even though Colombia is one country, its Rotary districts hold conferences separately, and events like the Project Fair or Latir rarely bring everyone together. This conference served as an important moment of reunion.
Bucaramanga, with its rolling streets and warm-hearted people, welcomed us graciously. One highlight was the visit to Universidad de Chicamocha, a university focused on culinary and artistic education. There, we enjoyed a delicious, well-explained dinner, traditional dances, and vibrant live music.
The Council of Past Governors gathered for a special lunch, accompanied by trio music and later, Mexican music in honor of our beloved RPRI Jesús Valdéz and his Rotary partner Mary, in a joyful and fraternal setting.
The official opening ceremony at the Holiday Inn featured a flag parade, with flags from all represented countries—including Panama and Mexico—as well as each department in the district. Whenever a flag was announced, Rotarians from that region stood up proudly and applauded. The speeches by the Governor of Santander, the Mayor of Bucaramanga, the Conference Chair, and Governor Blanquita were filled with inspiration and unity, encouraging everyone to grow Rotary and meet the goals set at the year’s start.
One emotional highlight was the tribute to Rotarian Omar J. Gómez Arenas from the San Gil Club, who has 61 years of Rotary service. At 90 years of age, his legacy is remarkable—and he barely missed a single dance! I joked with the Past Governors that to dance like that at 90, maybe it’s better not to be a District Governor—because the job is exhausting, but rewarding.
Saturday brought reports from Rotaract, Interact, and Governor Blanca Cifuentes, along with several impactful presentations. The night was filled with culture and celebration—traditional dances, a live orchestra, and a disco where the Rotarians of 4271 radiated boundless energy.
One particularly joyful and inspiring element was the active participation of Youth Exchange students, from countries such as Germany, France, Brazil, Italy, and more. They shared their experiences, helped with activities, and added an international flavor that elevated the entire conference.
As you read this Sunday Letter, the conference is still in progress, and I hope to share a second part with more reflections soon. But I can already say that attending events in other districts opens doors to new ideas, best practices, and meaningful international friendships.
